Men's Health Q&A

What causes low testosterone?

Low testosterone is very common, affecting nearly 40% of men 45 and older. Low levels of testosterone can result in a number of concerning symptoms like fatigue, decreased muscle mass, depression, and erectile dysfunction. In most cases, low testosterone comes from age-related changes that cause your body to produce less testosterone.

The decline of testosterone typically begins after age 30 and continues to decline throughout your life. Other issues like obesity, injuries, and certain chronic conditions can also impact your testosterone levels. Treating your low testosterone levels can restore your sexual function, improve your muscle mass and physical performance, and improve your overall mood and well-being.

What is BPH?

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) refers to a noncancerous enlargement of your prostate gland. Similar to low testosterone, BPH comes from age-related changes that gradually increase the size of your prostate over time.

For most men, the gradual enlargement of the prostate causes no issues, while for others, it can lead to urinary incontinence. If you experience symptoms like frequent nighttime urination or difficulty emptying your bladder, you may be suffering from BPH.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is a common concern for many men as they age. Although it can be difficult to discuss, erectile dysfunction isn’t something you should just accept as a natural part of aging. A number of issues can cause erectile dysfunction including:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep disorders
  • Injuries to the pelvis or spine
  • Certain medications
  • Depression, stress, or anxiety
  • Relationship problems

In many cases, erectile dysfunction is highly treatable. The team at Golden Gate Urology Berkeley works with you to determine the underlying cause of your dysfunction and the best treatment for restoring your sexual health.
